Huawei Selects TeleCommunication Systems' Xypoint(R) Solutions Suite for Location-Based Services

Note: Comtech Acquired TCS on 2/23/2016

ANNAPOLIS, MD, Jan 10, 2011 -- TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a world leader in highly reliable and secure mobile communication technology, and Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today jointly announced that they have entered into a Master Purchase Agreement to provide Huawei customers with access to TCS' location-based services (LBS) technology. As a recognized global provider of network infrastructure, Huawei selected TCS to enhance its solutions by providing a fully integrated set of location-based products and services.

TCS will provide its global-leading end-to-end Xypoint® LBS solutions to complement Huawei's products and solutions. The relationship will include providing LBS platforms and professional services to address the growing operator demand for LBS managed services. TCS will deploy a dedicated team to support Huawei with business, marketing, and technical resources.

"For its broad and growing wireless operator relationships, Huawei is dedicated to providing world-class products and services," said Drew Morin, chief technology officer for TCS. "TCS has an established industry track record of delivering innovative LBS solutions to wireless operators, and we look forward to working with Huawei to provide the most reliable and proven location-based services to their customers."

"We look forward to working with TCS to provide our customers with a fully integrated set of location-based products and services," said George Huang, the Vice President of Huawei Software. "Huawei is recognized worldwide for its leadership in providing innovative and compelling new mobile services that are helping operators attract new customers, deliver new revenue streams and enhance the revenues from existing services. In particular, Huawei's state-of-the-art service platforms were acknowledged for their ability to coexist seamlessly with existing systems and complement service offerings already available so that operators can easily transition to new services."

ABI Research forecasts that global LBS carrier revenue will grow from $2.6 billion in 2009 to $13 billion in 2013. The location capabilities that TCS is providing will allow Huawei to offer best-in-class location solutions to their carrier customers, enabling those carriers to tap into the emerging LBS market.

The Xypoint platform location products covered by the Master Services Agreement include:

  • Gateway Mobile Location Center (GMLC), which coordinates activities to ensure that a location is obtained and returned to the requesting application;
  • Serving Mobile Location Server (SMLC), used for determining the coordinates of a handset based on network measurements;
  • Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) servers, which support Assisted-GPS precise location determination, enabling commercial services for applications that require precise positioning (e.g. Navigation, Family Finder); and
  • Location Services Gateway, which serves as the interface between the LBS platform components and LBS applications using standard communication protocols, and provides authentication, authorization, privacy, and revenue assurance related to location applications and transactions.

With more than a decade of experience in networks around the world, TCS has delivered world-class LBS solutions to more than 60 wireless carriers in North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. TCS was the first to demonstrate the use of location technologies in support of emergency services, deploying the first wireless E9-1-1 solution in the United States, and was the first company to deploy a commercial precise location infrastructure in Europe to support UMTS. TCS has provided proven precise location technology for in-network deployments or via world-class hosting solutions, employing different business models and pricing methods to adapt to customers' specific needs. TCS has also built and launched navigation and mapping-based applications in mature and emerging global markets.
