Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Receives Additional $1.0 Million SATCOM Equipment Order to Expand Unified National Emergency Telecommunications & Network Restoral Platform in Asia-Pacific

MELVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- November 21, 2013--Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (NASDAQ: CMTL) announced today that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., received a $1.0 million equipment order. This follow-on order from a telecommunications operator is for satellite earth station equipment, including Satellite Modems, CX-U RAN Optimization Units, RF Transceivers and Amplifiers. The operator will utilize the equipment to support the further build out of a Vipersat-powered unified national emergency telecommunications and network restoral platform in the Asia-Pacific region. The network consists of two national hubs, 300 fixed earth stations, 100+ Communication-on-The-Move (COTM) emergency response vehicles and flyaways.

After the successful completion of Phase 1 of the network roll out, the operator will continue building out the network to other areas in the country. A combination of Comtech EF Data's and its subsidiary, Memotec's, equipment will be utilized in conjunction with Comtech EF Data's Vipersat Management System (VMS) to deliver a fully automated, on-demand emergency backup system to support the transmission of traditional telecommunications services, IP-based traffic, cellular voice and data traffic, and video conferencing over IP.

The Vipersat Management System provides a scalable dynamic SCPC (dSCPC) capacity management solution that facilitates bandwidth sharing, automates space segment allocation and allows for establishment of efficient, low latency, low jitter links. It manages "pools" of available bandwidth and the automation of putting up and tearing down a carrier when there is an outage situation. The power levels, symbol rates, modulation and coding are pre-programmed. When there is a failure, VMS dynamically finds and allocates available resources and determines where to put the circuit.

The combination of VMS and the Comtech EF Data modems enable a variety of antenna sizes, power, modulation and forward error correction combinations to be utilized, ensuring that satellite links are always operating at optimum efficiency using minimum bandwidth. A single Vipersat system can provide backup services for multiple operators, many geographic locations and a variety of remotes from just a few kbps to multi-Mbps.

"As the preeminent solution for public emergency response networks, our technologies facilitate significant bandwidth efficiencies and cost savings without affecting service quality," commented Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. "This operator had previously evaluated different technologies including TDM/TDMA, and selected our Vipersat-based dSCPC solution for its multi-layered, hub-spoke national emergency network."
