Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Awarded $1.0 Million Contract to Modernize Satellite Communications Technology in the Far East

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct 26, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (NASDAQ: CMTL) announced today that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data, was awarded a $1.0 million contract to deploy CDM-600 Satellite Modems to an organization in the Far East.

The installation of the CDM-600 Satellite Modems, supporting 70/140 MHz, will expand the organization's current infrastructure and power it with the latest satellite communications technologies. The CDM-600 is an advanced, open network satellite modem that supports data rates up to 20 Mbps, an array of modulation techniques, standards and interfaces, plus the industry's widest range of forward error correction options, ensuring optimum performance based on varying network conditions. Specific features that will be utilized in this customer's satellite communications links include the recently announced Low-Density Parity-Check Codes (LDPC) forward error correction, 8-QAM modulation, 2nd Generation Turbo Product Coding (TPC), and efficient Drop & Insert.

"Our new LDPC forward error correction continues Comtech's tradition of dominance in satellite modem technology. It provides our customers with another tool to increase their satcom link performance and reduce the overall cost of signal transmission," stated Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp.

The innovative LDPC takes performance to new heights when utilized in networks with lower coding rates and higher data rates by offering power and bandwidth savings. When LDPC and 8-QAM are combined, satellite transponder utilization can be maximized, resulting in minimized operating expenses. TPC provides increased coding gain and lower decoding delay, while the Drop & Insert multiplexer enables Comtech EF Data's modems to transmit/receive fractional parts of a T1 or E1 data stream.

Comtech EF Data Corp. manufactures a broad spectrum of Data and RF products for satellite communications, including Satellite Modems, Network Monitor and Control Software, TCP/IP Performance Enhancement Proxy, Converters, Solid State Power Amplifiers, Transceivers and Satellite Terminals. All products meet or exceed the standards published by Intelsat(R), Eutelsat, Insat, AsiaSat and other worldwide and regional satellite networks.
