Comtech Telecommunications Awarded Contract For Satellite Communications Program
  • Bahamas Telecommunications Corp. Is Customer
  • Total Contracts Under Program Could Exceed $1 Million
  • Transportable Terminal Will Provide Emergency Communications
MELVILLE, NY -- August 6, 2001 - Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq: CMTL) today announced that it has received a $680,000 contract for the first phase of work on a satellite communications program that will provide emergency communications from anywhere in the Bahamas island chain.

The contract, the first awarded in a project that is expected to have a second phase and total more than $1 million, was awarded by the Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation (Batelco) to the Orlando-based Comtech Systems segment of Comtech Telecommunications. Under it, the company will:

  • Engineer, manufacture and provide an upgrade of Batelco's existing fixed satellite station in Nassau, the Bahamas.

  • Provide a high-capacity, transportable satellite terminal for emergency communications anywhere in the Bahamas.
The contract calls for delivery and activation of the new equipment within 60 days, so that it will be ready for use in the approaching hurricane season.

Fred Kornberg, chairman and president of Comtech Telecommunications, noted that although this is the first satellite earth station contract awarded to the company by Batelco, the two organizations have long experience in working together on over-the-horizon microwave communications projects.

"Batelco's experience with Comtech was an important element in our success in winning this new contract," Mr. Kornberg said. "They know we have done a good job for them in the past, and they know we can do this job right, too - and get it done on time."

Richard Burt, president of Comtech Systems, said the Batelco contract is the latest result of the company's decision two years ago to pursue a bigger presence in the satellite communications market. "This is an example of our ability to win new business in special situations where our capabilities give us a competitive edge," Mr. Burt said. "In this case that competitive edge was our proven ability to provide high quality on a tight, challenging schedule."
