Comtech Receives $5.9 Million Order For Over-The-Horizon Microwave Troposcatter Communications Equipment
  • Contract Awarded by Nortel's Cogent Defense Systems
  • Equipment Is For U.K. Rapid Reaction Force
  • Inter-operable with NATO and U.S. Systems
MELVILLE, NY -- August 8, 2001 -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq: CMTL) today announced that it has received a $5.9 million order for tactical over-the-horizon microwave troposcatter communications equipment to be used by the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense.

The order was awarded to Comtech's Orlando-based Comtech Systems Inc. subsidiary by Cogent Defense Systems, a subsidiary of Nortel Networks. The equipment will be part of an overall communications network being developed by Cogent for the U.K.'s Rapid Reaction Force (JRRF).

The Cogent system includes a full suite of voice, data and ATM switching and network management technology. It also includes a miniature GSM mobile communications system and a long range over-the-horizon microwave troposcatter system. The entire package provides a leading-edge, secure, unified communications solution capable of evolving with developments in technology.

The Comtech order is for six shelter-mounted tactical digital over-the-horizon microwave systems. These systems will include over-the-horizon microwave troposcatter radio modems, high-power amplifiers, antenna systems and trailer mounted electric-generating equipment. They will provide long-range communications capability for the Rapid Reaction Force.

Because it is air-transportable, the Cogent system will make it possible for communications to be quickly established between units in the field as soon as the Rapid Reaction Force arrives in a foreign trouble spot. The Defense Ministry's Procurement Agency encouraged the use off-the-shelf technology to achieve quick delivery of a system that meets cost and performance requirements.

Comtech Systems, Inc., is a global leader in over-the-horizon microwave troposcatter communications technology. Its integrated system meets or exceeds all of the U.K. program's requirements. Comtech's equipment is used by civilian and military organizations around the world.

Fred Kornberg, chairman and president of Comtech Telecommunications, said Nortel chose Comtech in preference to competitors because of the company's leadership in digital over-the-horizon troposcatter communications equipment and systems.

"Our highly advanced, field-proven 8 Mbs digital adaptive modem proved to be a particularly important advantage in this competition," Mr. Kornberg said. "It's another example of how our varied but complementary technological capabilities enhance our ability to compete around the world and continue our growth by doing so."

Comtech Systems Inc., (www.comtechsystems.com) an Orlando, Florida based company, specializes in system design, integration, supply and commissioning of turnkey communication systems including satellite, over-the-horizon microwave troposcatter and line of site microwave systems.
