Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Receives $1.2 Million Order from the U.S. Department of Defense for SatCom Infrastructure Equipment

October 3, 2007 at 12:00 AM EDT

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct 03, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (NASDAQ: CMTL) announced today that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., received a $1.2 million order from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) for satellite communications infrastructure equipment. The equipment will be deployed to support a new, managed satellite-based communications network.

The order consists of the turboIP®-45 Performance Enhancement Proxy, the SLM-5650 Satellite Modem and the Vipersat Management System (VMS). The turboIP-45 was designed to combat the inherent challenges of transmitting Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) over satellite links. It provides transparent acceleration of TCP sessions and supports the Space Communications Protocol Standard Transport Protocol (SCPS-TP).

Designed specifically for government satellite networks, the SLM-5650 Satellite Modem complies with the requirements of the Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS) defined in Military Standard (MIL-STD)-188-165A, modem types I, II, IV, V and VI. This high-speed modem supports data rates up to 155 Mbps, and offers flexible interfaces including Gigabit Ethernet, advanced forward error correction and higher order modulation. It is compact and rugged, ideally suited for many government and military applications, such as fixed, at-the-pause, and on-the-move communications.

To support the DOD's applications, the SLM-5650 Satellite Modem will be configured with optional features designed to optimize network performance, functionality and security. These options include a Network Processor module supporting the VMS for seamless IP-based bandwidth and capacity management, and a Transmission Security (TRANSEC) module providing Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS)-140-2 Level 2 security.

VMS is an automated bandwidth, capacity and network management system with an intuitive graphical user interface. VMS enables users to easily configure, control and monitor satellite networks, and automates capacity allocation and spectrum management processes. These capabilities allow SCPC carriers to be resized automatically based on a variety of user-defined policies, providing on-demand services and unparalleled space segment savings.

Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. said, "This order is another demonstration of Comtech's multi-faceted ability to support the U.S. government's communication requirements."
