Comtech Announces $650,000 Contract for Turbo Codec Satellite Communications Modems MELVILLE, NY - February 23, 2000 - Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq: CMTL) announced today that ATCO Frontec of Ottawa, Canada, has awarded it a contract with a value of $650,000 for the Model CDM-550 Satellite Modem produced by its Comtech Communications Corporation (CCC) operating unit in Arizona.

The award follows extensive testing of the CDM-550 modem by ATCO Frontec, which will use it to update a USA/Canada defense communications satellite network. The contract provides for immediate delivery of more than 200 modems.

Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications, said the CDM-550 was chosen because of its cross-brand compatibility and the performance advantages made possible by its technological advances.

"One such advance is the revolutionary new Turbo Codec forward error correction algorithm," Mr. Kornberg said. "The Turbo Codec offers significant data transmission cost savings by providing up to a 40% bandwidth reduction compared to the more traditional concatenated Reed-Solomon Codec. It requires only half the power of low-bandwidth modulation techniques such as 8 PSK-TCM."

Mr. Kornberg further noted that the CDM-550 modem also offers Viterbi and Sequential decoders, BPSK, QPSK and OQPSK modulation, data rates from 2.4 to 2048 kbps in one bit increments, and the EDMAC (Embedded Distant-end Monitor and Control) channel, which enables the full monitoring and control of remote sites through the hub site modem without additional cabling or equipment.

With the addition of its new modem product lines, Comtech Communications now provides complete equipment solutions for data and voice delivery over Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs). It designs and manufactures a broad range of high performance, high quality products for a multitude of satellite communications applications for the domestic and international marketplace. These products include a broad spectrum of C, X, and Ku Band Transceivers, Frequency Up and Down Converters, Solid State Power Amplifiers and Satellite Modems that meet or exceed the standards published by Intelsat, Eutelsat, Insat, AsiaSat and other worldwide and regional satellite networks.

Comtech Telecommunications, Corp., through its operating units, is a broad-based supplier of mobile data communications transceivers and services, state-of-the-art solid state high power RF microwave amplifiers and high-technology satellite and over-the-horizon microwave telecommunication products and systems for commercial and government applications.
